Reflection sept 9, 2014
No I didn't find any of these theories surprising because many of them are pretty self explanatory. For example the theory of cultural Materialism it describes the best way to understand human culture is to examine material conditions for example climate change , food supply, geography, etc. Another example is the theory of feminism which describes how the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Both of these theories in my opinion describe in their name what they are talking about. For example when I hear the word feminism I automatically think that it's a female wish or opinion because if it was a male's wish/opinion they probably wouldn't have called the theory feminism. Same thing goes for the theory of cultural materialism the word cultural lets me know that its about a specific culture or cultures in general and the word materialism indicates that is has something to do with the things that we can touch. This topic doesn't engage me and make me want to learn more about this topic because I am more interested in the people aspect/ section of anthropology rather then their culture.
Article Analysis Sept 11, 2014
- "Human life expectancy has already increased from about 45 at the start of the 20th century to 80 today. Because of advancements in technology, which will affect natural selection, Last suggests life expectancy could increase to 120 as early as 2050."
2. "In addition to longer lives, humans will likely delay the timing of biological reproduction and reduce the number of offspring too, according to Last. Taken together, these changes could signify a new type of human, more focused on culture than biology."
I completely agree with this statement because if we look back in time around the 1800s the average number of children per family was seven. Then fast track forward to the 1900s and the number of kids dropped significantly, it went from 7 children to 4 per family. (it said 3.8 but i rounded it to 4. However if we look at the average numbers of children per family today it also dropped it went from 4 children to 2 children per family. therefore I believe that in a few years its going to drop to 1 child per family.
3. "Considering recent advancements like in-vitro fertilization, egg-freezing, and even adoption, the mechanics of biological reproduction have radically changed. "The biological clock isn't going to be around forever," Last says — or at least, people can turn it off or ignore it for a while."
I disagree with this statement because your biological clock will always be ticking yeah you may be able to freeze your eggs and thy will be good when ever you want to get pregnant however if you are in your 40s then it is so much more dangerous to get pregnant then if you to get pregnant at the age of 20. The only time when your biological clock wouldn't matter is if you plan on adopting rather the having your own.
